2012 Plano v. Allen – Plano Goes Down Swinging 34-35

Although the outcome didn’t go Plano’s way, Friday night’s debut of the Plano-Allen rivalry in Allen’s new state-of-the-art stadium was everything a high school football fan could want.  Scoring in every quarter.  Big plays by both offenses and defenses.  An underdog on the brink of an upset.  It was the last game of the regular season coming down to which team came up with possession after an on-side kick with half a minute left in the game.

The Wildcats struck first in the 1st quarter with a rushing TD by #5 Braylan Campbell capped by a PAT by #96 Jourdan Escobar.   Allen’s offense was still feeling out Plano’s defense, and had to settle for a FG.  The 1st quarter ended with Plano up 7-3 and driving on offense.

Seconds into the 2nd quarter #21 Richard Lagow connected with a pass to #16 Mitchell Hansen along the Eagles sideline, and Hansen carried the ball into the end zone.  With the PAT Plano was ahead by 11 points.  Five minutes of regulation later #34 Andre Morman hurdled over low-flying Allen defenders to score, and with the help of Escobar Plano now had an 18 point lead.  But on the next drive Allen found a solution to Plano’s defense and scored their first TD, and with the PAT it was 21-10.  They repeated this feat five minutes later, and with 35 seconds left in the half Plano’s lead had been whittled down to 4 points, 21-17.  Lagow took a knee to end the half.

Refreshed by the break, the two teams struggled to make headway on offense until #5 Campbell rushed the goal line for his second TD of the night with 4:17 left in the 3rd quarter.  Two and a half minutes later Allen replied with a rushing TD of their own, and with a successful 2-point conversion narrowed the score to 28-25.  That score would hold to the end of the quarter.

Allen carried over their momentum from the 3rd quarter and tipped the scales in their favor 32-28 with a rushing touchdown and PAT with 9:43 remaining on the clock.  Allen added a buffer with a FG at the 4:05 mark, and Plano was down by 7, 35-28.  Plano’s offensive drive sputtered, and as Allen took possession Plano’s coaches challenged the Wildcats defense to make a stand.  And they did with smothering, helmet-popping pressure that stymied the Eagles offense.  The stadium was roaring like the launch of a moon rocket.

Lagow marched his offense down the field, and with 35 seconds left on the clock connected with a pass down the center to #2 Corbin Whitehair.  Whitehair had caught the ball with his fingers on extended arms as it dropped in front of him, desperately scrambling to stay on his feet until he crossed the goal line, with Eagles defenders literally at his heels.  As he crashed into the end zone the ball was still stuck to his hands as if they were dipped in Gorilla Glue.  It was now Allen 35, Plano 34, with 35 seconds left in the game.  The crowded stadium was on its feet.  Lagow returned to the field – Plano was going for a 2-point conversion and the win.  Lagow looked to Hansen in the back left corner of the end zone and fired.  A beefy Eagle defender in his face, Hansen lept up over the head of the defender and grabbed the ball with both arms extended, but as he came down to the turf the defender pryed the ball loose before Hansen could tuck it.  Despite Hansen’s incredible effort, the ref ruled that the receiver didn’t have control in the end zone, the pass was incomplete.

But Plano had one more shot – an offside kick.  Escobar huddled his kickoff squad for the play and executed a bouncing short kick toward the Allen sideline that deflected off an Allen player, then through the hands of a Wildcat, and then was lost in a seething pile of players.  After what seemed an eternity, the refs peeled back the layers of players and pointed toward the north end zone – Allen’s ball.  The Allen quarterback lined up back for the snap and took a knee, ending the game to the relief of Eagles fans and heartbreak for the Wildcats faithful.

2012 Wildcats Varsity Victory 15th Over Panthers, 42-12 (Updated)

In their 31st meeting on the gridiron, Plano East entered the field with a one-game edge in the series over Plano.  When the teams left the field Friday night the rivalry record was tied, 15-15-1, evened by the Wildcats 42-12 win.

The Wildcats won this game with a running play book (391yds net rushing, 5 TDs vs. 92yds net passing, 1 TD) and a high-pressure defense.

The Panthers kicked off, and half way through the 1st quarter the Wildcats scored on a quarterback keeper by #21 Richard Lagow, capped with a PAT by #96 Jourdan Escobar.  The Wildcats defense stepped up the pressure two minutes later when #26 Brian Hanks intercepted and put the ball back into the hands of the Wildcats offense.  The quarter ended with Plano up 7-0.

A minute and a half into the 2nd quarter Plano’s offense scored its only passing TD when Lagow connected with #22 Corey Robertson in the end zone.  With Escobar’s PAT Plano was up 14-0.  East’s offense continued to struggle against the Plano defense, and when the tables turned Plano’s offense struck again on the ground.  With 3:04 left in the half #5 Braylan Campbell rushed into the end zone and with the PAT Plano was now up 21-0, the score the teams would reflect upon during halftime.

The Panthers received the second half kick off, but on their first offensive play #27 Steven Cypert intercepted.  Within two minutes of regulation play the Wildcats scored  with another Lagow quarterback keeper and Escobar PAT.  Barely into the 3rd quarter the Wildcats had 28 unanswered points on the board.  On their heels, the Panthers regrouped and put together their first successful offensive drive, and at the 6:58 mark of the quarter they put the ball into the end zone for the first time.  But the Wildcats defense denied the Panthers 2-point conversion attempt, and the Panthers had to settle for only 6 points on the scoreboard.   With the ball back in Wildcats hands, it took only a minute for Braylan Campbell to carry the ball across the goal line again.  The 3rd quarter ended with Plano up 35-6.

The 4th quarter began with the Wildcats driving on offense and it took only 5 seconds for #34 Andre Morman to score on the ground.  Escobar’s kick was true yet again, and

with 11:55 left in the game the Wildcats lead 42-6.  The Panthers offense mustered one more TD, this one an attack in the air, but yet again the Wildcats defense squelched the 2-point conversion attempt.  With 8:07 left in the game the final score was cast at 42-12.  The game ended with #28 Christian Hutzler taking a knee, putting the 31st Plano-Plano East contest in the record book.

2012 UIL Week 7- So Close But So Far – Plano 14, McKinney Boyd 15 (Updated)

When two football teams are evenly matched, head to head, move to counter-move, the difference between winning and losing the game can be as simple as a change of possession.  And so it seemed after four incredibly closely played quarters between two teams that showed a propensity to score quickly and deeply into double digits in earlier games.   The game came down to one point and untimely change of possessions.

The game started with Plano receiving the kickoff, and the grind started.  The first score of the game came late in the 1st quarter when #21 Richard Lagow scored on a quarterback keeper which was capped by a PAT by #96 Jourdan Escobar.  Less than two minutes later the quarter ended with Plano up 7-0.

A few minutes into the 2nd quarter an unsuccessful fake punt play gave the Broncos the ball in Wildcats territory and at the 8:55 mark a pass play put the Broncos on the scoreboard 7-6.  The PAT attempt was no good, the ball bouncing off the left upright.  Five minutes later, with a different kicker, the Broncos put up three with a successful FG and the half ended with the Broncos in the lead 9-7 over the Wildcats.

The Wildcats kicked off to start the second half and the entire 3rd quarter was a test of wills between the two teams. The Wildcats were driving at the end of the quarter, but still down by 2.

Seconds into regulation play in the 4th quarter Lagow scored again with yet another quarterback keeper and Escobar’s PAT kick was true, and the Wildcats regained the lead, 14-9.  The Broncos responded with a strong offensive drive of their own, and a breakaway run through the Wildcats defense put another 6 points on the board for the Broncos, and they were back in the lead 15-14 with 9:30 left in the game.  The Broncos tried to buy some insurance for the wisp of a lead with a 2-point play but they were

unsuccessful.  The Wildcats pushed hard to get into position to score, but lost possession twice before they could get within field goal range.  McKinney Boyd’s 1 point lead held until the horn sounded the end of the quarter and the game.

2012 Game – Plano 21, Marcus 35 – Mistakes Were Made

#5 Braylan Campbell is upended on his run to salvage a snap over the QB’s head./Photo by Thad Fenton

In his book How We Decide author Johah Lehrer explains how our brains make decisions.  In the first chapter he uses the game of football (and quarterback Tom Brady) as an example to make a few key points about decision making.  One of them is that for some activities, like football, once the ball is snapped the best decisions are made not by thoughtful calculation, but by “gut feeling.”  Another point is that our brains truly do learn from our mistakes if we don’t intentionally suppress the memory of those mistakes.

Perhaps Thursday night’s varsity game in Marauders Stadium may be an example of the Wildcats thinking too hard about what should come naturally.  And reflecting back on it, loss aside, the game presents a good opportunity to learn.

Plano won the toss and deferred, putting the ball into Marauder hands straight-away.  And straight-away the Marauders made good on their offensive opportunities with a pass play into the end zone.  Two and a half minutes into the game Marcus was up 7-0.  That score held through the remainder of the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter opened with Plano on offense, stalled outside the red zone.  A Plano field goal attempt was no good at the 11:14 mark, but the Wildcats seized an opporunity a minute later when #81 Bert McJunkin intercepted and ran the ball in for a TD.  The PAT by #96 Jourdan Escobar was good, and the score was tied 7-all.  Marcus jumped ahead with a rushing TD and PAT with 3:43 left in the half, and twenty seconds later intercepted a Plano pass and turned that into another 7 points in a drive lasting a minute and a half.  With only 8 seconds remaining in the half the Wildcats tried to close the gap with a field goal but the attempt failed.  The score at the half was Marcus 21, Plano 7.

The 3rd quarter was all in the Marauders favor.  Plano received the second half kickoff, but an early Wildcats fumble was recovered by the Marauders and promptly turned into another 7 points.  Plano’s offense struggled, and at the 3:46 mark the team lost momentum again with a fumble to Marcus.  The quarter ended with the Wildcats in a 28-7 hole, but driving on offense.

Another Wildcats defender put points on the board with 8:28 on the clock when #14 David Griffith scooped a Marauder punt out of the air and ran it into the end zone for a TD.  The PAT was good and Plano narrowed the gap to 28-14.  A minute and half later Wildcats defender #27 Steven Cypert created an opportunity for the offense by intercepting, but a minute later an overthrown Plano bomb was picked by one of the double-teaming Marcus defensive backs.  Marcus went on to score another rushing TD and PAT and the gap increased, 35-14 with 4:30 left on the clock.  The Wildcats offense put their noses to the grindstone, and three minutes later #21 Richard Lagow connected in the air with #16 Mitchell Hansen for a TD.  Gier’s PAT was good, and at 1:48 Plano closed the gap to 35-21.  Not giving up, Plano’s special teams kickoff squad came through with a successfull on-side kick recovery and the Plano offense was back on the field.  The Wildcats ground down to the red zone but weren’t able to make the end zone again.  The Marauders secured their first win of the 2012 season, and the Wildcats fell to 3-2 in non-district play.

Unofficial Offensive Stats: Passing – #21 Lagow 15 of 23 for 298yds with 1 TD and 2 INTs, #16 Hansen 0 for 1, #5 Braylan Campbell 0 for 1;  Receiving – #16 Hansen 8 catches for 190yds and 1 TD, #12 Devon Richardson 2 for 42yds, #22 Corey Richardson 3 for 34yds, #5 Campbell 2 for 32yds; Rushing (net) – #34 Andre Morman 11 caries for 25yds, #5 Campbell 16 for 24yds, #22 Robertson 4 for 9yds, #21 Lagow 8 for 3yds; Kicking/Punts – #96 Escobar 3 PATs, 0-2 FG; #95 John Cummings 2 punts avergaging 44yds.
