2012 Fall Prep Underway For Wildcats

At 7:00 a.m. it was still a little dim, but a pleasant temperature at the Plano Senior High football practice field Monday morning.  Practice stations for the field were already laid out, and most of the coaches were apprehensively chatting or tossing footballs mid-field while Coaches McCullough, Dickey and May prepped the players inside.

“It’s like waiting to open a present.” remarked Defensive Coordinator Chris Fisher.  “Who’s going to step up?  Who will be the surprise and exceed all our expectations?  It’s exciting.”

Trainer Chris Reynolds pulls up to the edge of the field in a golf cart, followed by a couple handfuls of student trainers on foot.  You can tell by the way some are moving they haven’t been getting up this early lately.

Promptly at 7:15 Coach Dickey approaches the field from the athletic building, and behind him a trickle, then a river, of maroon bodies with unadorned plain white helmets pour onto the field in a slow jog.  Most have a spring in their step.  A few don’t, and no doubt the coaches will notice and work to correct that.  Probably loudly.

There are few quiet voices on the practice field.  But it does become quiet after warm-ups when the sea of maroon semi-circles Coach McCullough.  He explains the general daily practice routine over the next two weeks, everyone’s responsibility to check the board to know what’s expected of them each day.  And one more thing.

“See this beautiful practice field?  Let’s keep it that way.  We’ll do calisthenics on the north field starting tomorrow.  If you see anyone messing around on it, shoo them off.”  A chuckle rumbles though the mass of players and coaches.

And after a “Plano on three!” the maroon sea parts into groups for position drills.

Are you ready for some football?

Focus On Fall 2012 Football Season Begins Today

The Wildcats begin to focus solely on the 2012 Fall football season when the players report to practice at 7:00 a.m. today.

With summer weight lifting, conditioning, and 7-on-7 competition behind them, veteran PISD central cluster student athletes return to Plano Senior High, joined by incoming freshmen, focusing solely on success under Thursday or Friday night lights.

The veteran QB’s, receivers, running backs, linebackers and defensive backs are coming off a very successful summer season of league and tournament 7-on-7 play, with the summer varsity team winning Plano’s first-ever State Tournament Championship, in Division I (4A and 5A school) play.  They’ll be joined Monday by the O- and D-Line veterans, and of course high school feeder school newcomers.

With the pre-season scrimmage against Mesquite a scant 13 dlays ahead, Head Coach Jaydon McCullough and his staff have little time to fill the holes left by graduated seniors and assemble effective varsity and JV strings.  Classes may not have started yet, but for coaches and players vacation is definitely over.

Re-alignment Reactions: Surprise, Excitement

“Yes, I was surprised.  I didn’t see a six-team district coming.”

That was the reaction of Plano football Head Coach Jaydon McCullough when we spoke with him early Thursday morning.

“I thought it would be a seven or eight team district.  But I can understand how this came about with travel times for all the schools.  I had to scramble to get pre-district games lined up, but now we know who we’re playing and I’m excited.”

Will it be an advantage for the Wildcats to be in a six-team district?  “This definitely didn’t hurt us.  But we’re still playing good teams, tough teams.  They will be well-coached and playing hard to get into the playoffs.  It will be a challenge for us, but I’m looking forward to it.”

PISD Athletic Director Gerald Brence provided some re-alignment perspective and observations from his attendance at the UIL roll-out meeting Thursday morning.  “I thought UIL did a very good job.  Re-alignment is very difficult, and there’s always some controversy.  This alignment is due to the population changes along the I-35 core in Texas.  Demographics changed, which shifted everything East. ”

“The Plano schools are now in Region II which will push regional playoff games toward south Dallas and Waco.  This will be good for the Plano schools because we’ll be closer to home in playoffs.   As for Plano schools being in a six team district, there is not a lot of room for error for any team.  It’s going to be a very competitive, very tight district.”

“PISD will be finishing out the competition year in District 8 and then looking forward to the new competition in District 10.  We’re very excited about this.”
