JV Wildcats End 2011 Season 8-2

Suffering from “I & I” – injuries and interceptions – a great season for Plano JV football ended on a sour note as they dropped the last game of the season to Plano West JV 21-7 Thursday evening in John Clark Stadium.

The 1st quarter was largely uneventful as the teams tested each other’s defense, ending 0-0.

Things began to heat up in the 2nd quarter for both teams.  The Wildcats struck first, with a 1 yard TD run by #3 Cody Farhat with 3:46 left in the half.  On the next offensive drive the Wolves moved the ball methodically down field, then struggled in the red zone.  With 1:04 remaining in the half, a Wolf running back on the 1 yard line made a desperation pitch to a teammate to keep the play alive and hopefully score.  A dangerous move, as #3 Farhat grabbed the ball in mid-air when rushing the gap and didn’t stop until he was in the opposite end zone.  But the Wildcat elation was short-lived, as the refs pointed to a flag back on the Plano 2 yard line.  6 points were taken off the scoreboard as the players walked back to the north end zone where the Wolves went back on offense, and in less than 30 seconds they scored their own rushing touchdown, making it 7-7.

After the Wildcats fielded the kick-off return, the remaining 37 seconds of Wildcats offense saw #6 Greg Peterson in as quarterback.  Peterson would reprise this role for the rest of the game, as starting quarterback #22 Corey Robertson stood helmetless on the Plano sideline.  With alternate quarterback Christian Hutzler held out for Friday night’s varsity game, and Robertson sidelined with an apparent injury, wide receiver Peterson stepped up.

For the first five minutes of the 3rd quarter the teams continued to test each other.  With 4:46 left in the 3rd the Wolves intercepted, and 27 seconds later capitalized with a touchdown and PAT, going ahead of the Wildcats 14-7.  The subsequent Wildcat offensive drive stalled, leading to a deep punt to the Wolves.  But three missed tackles by Plano special teams on the West punt return allowed the play to break open and West scored an insurance touchdown.  West killed Plano’s offensive drive with another interception a minute later, and the 3rd quarter ended 21-7.

The 4th quarter was much like the 1st as the teams traded possession without production, and at the ending buzzer it was Plano West JV 21, Plano JV 7.

Win-loss records for JV teams in the district are not readily published, so we’re doing the research to compile JV standings for the district for the season.  We’ll let you know what we uncover.

Wildcats JV Grab 7-0 Victory Over Plano East JV

Thursday night’s game at Kimbrough Stadium between cross-town rivals Plano JV and Plano East JV began with a light mist in the air and ended with a steady wind-driven cold rain that chilled to the bone.  A Hollywood script writer’s imagination couldn’t have matched the reality the fans, coaches, and players on both sides experienced in the 4th quarter of the game.

Passionate high school football in the raw.  Raw emotions.  Raw weather.  A raw contest between the Wildcat JV defense and the JV Panther offense.

The Wildcats put the only points on the board when quarterback #22 Corey Robertson connected with #11 Collin Carpenter in the end zone for a TD with 2:09 left in the 1st quarter.  #90 Jourdan Escobar’s PAT was good.

In the 2nd quarter, as the weather began to deteriorate, the Panthers mounted long drives that came up short due to Wildcats defense.  The weather also hampered the Wildcats offense, with fumbles killing promising drives.

By the half the daylight was almost gone, and the mist had turned to steady soaking rain.

Most of the 4th quarter was played on the Plano half of the field, with East trying to push through the red zone.

With time running out, and its running game going nowhere, East called in a pass play to break the impasse.  As East’s quarterback faded and cocked back to throw, on the Plano sideline you could hear several coaches almost simultaneously warn East, “Oh, you don’t want to throw at Farhat!  You don’t throw at Farhat!”  Almost on cue, #3 Cody Farhat turned from his man and intercepted the pass that came down from its arc like a duck landing in a pond.  Sure-handed, Farhat returned the ball about 40 yards, setting up the Wildcat offense for clock-draining running plays by #6 Greg Peterson and #27 Drew Grant.

The game ended on a fumble recovery by #79 Jonathon Coleman when the snapped ball bobbled through the Panther quarterback’s hands.  Soaked to the skin and exhausted, the Plano defense held.

Plano JV is now 8-1 for the season and 5-1 in district.

The JV Wildcats roared back after last week’s loss to trounce the Lewisville Farmers 47-6 in John Clark Stadium.

Plano JV Rolls Over Flower Mound 34-14

The Wildcats JV team had to wait past 7:00 p.m. for Vines to put away Flower Mound’s 10th grade team, but the wait was worth it as Plano’s JV team racked up its 6th season victory in its October 6 match at Flower Mound’s Neal Wilson Stadium.

The Wildcats defense was getting it done through the first three quarters, but the offense didn’t spark until the second quarter.

Coming out of the 1st quarter 0-0, #22 Corey Robertson’s pass connected with #6 Greg Peterson with only 1:06 left in the 2nd quarter to put Plano on the scoreboard 7-0.  The teams when into half time with that score.

After some passionate half time advice from the coaches, the Wildcats offense began to build steam 2:30 into the 3rd quarter with #2 Corbin Whitehair pulling down a pass and taking it in for Plano’s second TD.  The PAT from #95 John Cummings was good, and the 3rd quarter ended with Plano up 14-0.

With momentum on their side, the Wildcats offense struck again early in the 4th quarter when #22 Robertson scored on a quarterback keeper, capped with a good PAT.  1:35 into the quarter, Plano was up 21-0.

The Jaguars responded by returning the Wildcat kick off for a touchdown and PAT, tacking 7 on the scoreboard.  Three minutes later #24 Christian Hutzler found #6 Peterson in the back corner of the end zone on a 4th down pass play to put Plano up by another 6.

Again, the Jaguars promtly responded on their first offensive play after the kick off with a pass play with a long running finish into the end zone.  With the PAT it was 27-14 with 4:39 left in the game.

Plano’s final scoring response came when #10 Tanner Garfat caught a pass for a touchdown and good #95 Cummings PAT with 2:36 left on the clock, and 34-14 was the final score.

A particularly noteworthy receiving performance was on display Thursday night by #6 Peterson, who seemed to have pigskin magnets at the end of his arms throughout the game.   In one offensive series the Wildcats moved down the field in what seemed like effortless replays of #22 Robertson to #6 Peterson 8-10 yard passes.  And Peterson was just as sure-handed when the ball came from #24 Hutzler.

Offensive highlights from the stands (unofficial)- Passing: #24 Hutzler was 8 for 13 with 3 TD’s and no Int’s, #22 Robertson went 5 for 11 with 1 Int. . . Rushing: #27 Drew Grant 10 carries for 57 yards, #29 Dearion Johnson 9 for 54 yards, #22 Robertson 3 for 8 yards and 1 TD, and #24 Hutzler 5 for 8 yards . . . #95 Cummings had 4 PATs, and two punts for an average of 37 yards.

Defensive highlights from the stands (unofficial)- Sacks: it appeared that #25 Grant Sanders and #59 Evan Hainlin each had 1 . . . big Tackle for losses by #30 Myles Solsberry and #22 Robertson . . . Pass break ups by #22 Robertson, #30 Solsberry (3), #12 Steven Cypert . . . two-way player (quarterback & linebacker) #22 Robertson appears to have racked up 9 tackles . . . #3 Cody Farhat made an outstanding special teams tackle on a Plano kick off, pinning Flower Mound on their 3 yard line

Odds & Ends- The Wildcats JV had 240 yards passing and 128 yards rushing . . . 14 first downs . . . 5 penalties for 50 yards.

Hebron pulled within two points with 6:16 remaining in the second quarter, but Plano’s special teams responded with a touchdown scored by junior #34 Andre Morman returning the Hebron kick-off with 6:16 left in the half.  We happened to capture video of that return:

Plano JV Snubs Allen JV 14-7 – Full Report

The Plano Wildcats JV controlled the Allen Eagles JV during their 2011 match-up on September 22 night, keeping the Eagles out of the end zone until 2:23 in the 4th quarter.

Both teams tested each other through the first quarter, but with 8:06 left in the half #19 Dylan Muckey made a key interception for Plano, taking the ball to the Allen 14 yard line.  That interception set up a series that ended with a quarterback keeper into the end zone by #22 Corey Robertson, followed by a PAT by #95 John Cummings, putting Plano up 7-0.  Plano would lead the rest of the game.

Going into the third quarter up 7-0, the Wildcats offense struck again with a rushing touchdown by #29 Dearion Johnson and another Cummings PAT.  The Wildcats were up 14-0 with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter, and that score would hold until the Eagles finally scored late in the 4th.
