JV Falls to Hebron JV 21-24 In Last Minute Drive (Updated)

The Hebron Hawks JV football teams have won the majority of games against the JV Wildcats in the recent past, and as the fourth quarter wound down it looked like the 2012 game could be a win for the Wildcats JV.  But with 1:07 remaining on the clock, the JV Hawks pulled into a lead that the Wildcats couldn’t break.

The game started with a kickoff to Plano which was returned to the Plano 20.  Wasting no time, on the second play of the drive #28 Dearion Johnson ran 78 yards down field for a Wildcats JV touchdown.  The PAT kick by #96 Colton Gier was good, and with 9:09 left in the 1st quarter Plano was up 7-0.  #96 Gier then kicked into a heavy wind, and the Hawks fumbled the return and Plano recovered, putting them back on offense on about the Hebron 30.  Barely a minute later QB #22 Jonathon Lara put the ball in the air into the reliable hands of #42 Colby Cantu who scored Plano’s second TD.  The PAT was good, and still early in the 1st quarter the Wildcats JV were up 14-0.  The Hawks used the rest of the quarter to turn on its offense, and closed with two TD and but only one good PAT.  The score at the end of the 1st quarter was Wildcats 14, Hawks 13.

In the 2nd quarter #22 Lara lead another scoring drive in the air, this time connecting with #16 Nathan Nguyen for a TD, followed by another good PAT.  The Hawks responded with a field goal, and the teams went to the locker room at the half with the Wildcats leading 21-16.

Plano kicked off with the wind to open the 3rd quarter, and Hebron burned 6 minutes off the clock moving upfield against the wind before fumbling on the Plano 5 yard line.  Plano took over, but was unable to immediately capitalize on the Hebron error, and the teams exchanged possessions for the rest of the 3rd quarter and well into the 4th quarter in a defensive grind.

With five minutes left in the game, the Hawks started an offensive drive from their own 30 yard line with the wind at their backs, and scored a TD on a short running play with 1:07 remaining on the game clock.  The Hawks were successful with a two-point play and lurched ahead of the Wildcats 24-21.  Into the wind, the Wildcats couldn’t make the end zone in the time remaining and the JV Hawks extended their winning streak against Plano.

Plano JV – 62, Naaman Forest JV – 8 (Updated)

Kermit the Frog lamented in song that it’s not easy being green.  That appeared to apply to the Naaman Forest Rangers JV team late Wednesday afternoon as maroon Wildcats JV squads swept over the green and white-uniformed Rangers on their way to a lopsided victory on September 19.

The Rangers started the game with the ball, but only 40 seconds into the 1st quarter they lost a fumble, and 33 seconds later #28 Dearion Johnson put the first points on the board for the Wildcats with a rushing touchdown.  The PAT was good, as all but one would be for Plano in this game.  Between PAT’s and kickoffs Kicker #96 Colton Gier would get quite a workout.

Naaman lost another fumble with 5:56 still on the clock in the 1st, which was recovered by #44 Austin Davis.  Barely a minute later #28 Johnson capitalized on the error with another rushing TD.  Plano was up 14-0.

With 3 minutes left in the quarter #27 Matt Keys spelled #22 Jonathon Lara at the QB position and executed the aerial offensive attack with a TD pass to #42 Colby Cantu.

The 1st quarter ended with another fumble recovery by the Wildcats, this time by #8 Wykeel Wiley.  Plano was up 21-0 as the teams switched ends, and just five seconds into the 2nd quarter #28 Johnson struck again on the ground with annother TD.   With 4:47 left in the half #22 Lara scored in his own right with a QB keeper.   When the horn sounded for halftime maroon was up 35-0 over green.

The Wildcats received the second half kickoff, and scored another TD in a minute and a half of play time.  With 3:35 remaining in the 3rd quarter #27 Keys executed on his own QB keeper play into the end zone, and now Plano was up 48-0.  Less than a minute later Naaman fumbled again, recovered by #56 Lior Vansteenkiste.  With just under two minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter Plano scored on the ground again, and at the quarter’s end Plano lead 55-0.  But Naaman was driving.

Five seconds into the 4th quarter the Rangers finally got a taste of the end zone on a pass play, and were successful on the two point conversion.  Naaman was now on the board, 55-8.  Almost a minute later #15 Jackson Pierron replied with a rushing TD, and with the PAT Plano put up its final points of the game.  For the rest of the quarter the teams burned off the clock in a mid-field grind.

Despite the ample opportunities to celebrate and strut, the Wildcats JV team demonstrated a mature, business-like demeanor at every positive turn.   It was a positive reflection on the young Wildcats and their coaches.

Unofficial Offensive Stats: Passing – #27 Keys 3 for 4 for 81yds, no INT and 1 TD, #22 Lara 1 for 2 for 19yds, no INT or TD; Receiving - #6 Matt Kirchner 2 catches for 57yds, #42 Colby Cantu 1 for 33yds and 1 TD, #17 Philipp Moeller 1 for 10yds; Rushing – #4 T.J. Wildcats JV Posts 35-8 Victory Over Irving MacArthur JV

#28 Dearion Johnson piles up 3 TDs on the ground against Irv. MacArthur JV at Sept. 6 game at Clark Stadium./Photo by Thad Fenton.

It was a last minute decision to put junior running back Dearion Johnson in the JV line-up for the JV Plano-Irving MacArthur game on September 6 so he could get live action reps. To say he made the best of the reps would be an understatement.

Less than a minute into the game Johnson scampered for a Wildcats touchdown. He’d do that a second time with 4:19 left on the clock, still in the first quarter, and then for a third time with 5:17 on the clock in the 3rd quarter.

And Johnson wasn’t the only JV Wildcat to score against Irving Mac.

With 6:32 left in the half #42 Colby Cantu pulled down a pass from #27 Matt Keys and outran his defender into the end zone.

The Plano defense scored, too, as #21 Ryan Grambow spoiled an Irv. Mac. drive in the red zone early in the 4th quarter by intercepting a pass on the goal line and ran for what looked to be a 100 yard dodge-and-weave sprint to the opposite end zone to put up another touchdown.

All touchdowns were capped by successful PAT’s by kicker #96 Colton Gier, who was perfect at that job in this game.

Unofficial Offensive Stats: Passing – #27 Keys 3 for 3, 54yds and 1 TD; Receiving – #43 Cantu 1 for 34 yds, #31 Josh Walker 1 for 11yds, #6 Matt Kirchner 1 for 9yds; Rushing – #28 Johnson 8 carries for 154yds & 3 TDs, #4 T.J. Lee 4 for 16yds, #15 Jackson Pierron 1 for -4yds, #22 Jonathon Lee 1 for -4yds, #27 Keys 1 for -15yds; PATs – #96 Gier  5 for 5; Punts – #96 Gier 1 for 47yds.

Unofficial Defensive Stats:  Sacks – One shared by #52 Austin Pugh & #56 Lior Vansteenkiste; INTs – #21 Grambow 1 for 100yrd return & TD, #7 Romelo Bougere 1 for yd return; Tackles – #4 Lee 6, #21 Grambow 5, #2 Christian Klein 5, #44 Austin Davis 4, #48 Evan Brunner 4, #25 Marquis Hodge 4, #43 Tucker Pollacia 3, #8 Wykeel Wiley 3, #31 Josh Walker 3, #9 Colton Pusateri 3, #74 Caleb Yale 2, and all the following had one – #12 Neema Behbahani, #60 Peter Huang, #10 Jason Lee, #50 Jake Eckeberger, #11 Jason McNeely, #34 Taylor Knauber, #41 Michael Davis, #15 Pierron, #58 Gibson Jones, #33 Tyler Propes, #67 Matthew Tomeny.

Plano fumbled once, lost none.

The JV Wildcats appeared to have drawn 3 penalties for 51yds.

JV Wildcats End 2011 Season 8-2

Suffering from “I & I” – injuries and interceptions – a great season for Plano JV football ended on a sour note as they dropped the last game of the season to Plano West JV 21-7 Thursday evening in John Clark Stadium.

The 1st quarter was largely uneventful as the teams tested each other’s defense, ending 0-0.

Things began to heat up in the 2nd quarter for both teams.  The Wildcats struck first, with a 1 yard TD run by #3 Cody Farhat with 3:46 left in the half.  On the next offensive drive the Wolves moved the ball methodically down field, then struggled in the red zone.  With 1:04 remaining in the half, a Wolf running back on the 1 yard line made a desperation pitch to a teammate to keep the play alive and hopefully score.  A dangerous move, as #3 Farhat grabbed the ball in mid-air when rushing the gap and didn’t stop until he was in the opposite end zone.  But the Wildcat elation was short-lived, as the refs pointed to a flag back on the Plano 2 yard line.  6 points were taken off the scoreboard as the players walked back to the north end zone where the Wolves went back on offense, and in less than 30 seconds they scored their own rushing touchdown, making it 7-7.

After the Wildcats fielded the kick-off return, the remaining 37 seconds of Wildcats offense saw #6 Greg Peterson in as quarterback.  Peterson would reprise this role for the rest of the game, as starting quarterback #22 Corey Robertson stood helmetless on the Plano sideline.  With alternate quarterback Christian Hutzler held out for Friday night’s varsity game, and Robertson sidelined with an apparent injury, wide receiver Peterson stepped up.

For the first five minutes of the 3rd quarter the teams continued to test each other.  With 4:46 left in the 3rd the Wolves intercepted, and 27 seconds later capitalized with a touchdown and PAT, going ahead of the Wildcats 14-7.  The subsequent Wildcat offensive drive stalled, leading to a deep punt to the Wolves.  But three missed tackles by Plano special teams on the West punt return allowed the play to break open and West scored an insurance touchdown.  West killed Plano’s offensive drive with another interception a minute later, and the 3rd quarter ended 21-7.

The 4th quarter was much like the 1st as the teams traded possession without production, and at the ending buzzer it was Plano West JV 21, Plano JV 7.

Win-loss records for JV teams in the district are not readily published, so we’re doing the research to compile JV standings for the district for the season.  We’ll let you know what we uncover.

Wildcats JV Grab 7-0 Victory Over Plano East JV

Thursday night’s game at Kimbrough Stadium between cross-town rivals Plano JV and Plano East JV began with a light mist in the air and ended with a steady wind-driven cold rain that chilled to the bone.  A Hollywood script writer’s imagination couldn’t have matched the reality the fans, coaches, and players on both sides experienced in the 4th quarter of the game.

Passionate high school football in the raw.  Raw emotions.  Raw weather.  A raw contest between the Wildcat JV defense and the JV Panther offense.

#11Collin Carpenter pulls down the ball in the end zone for the game's only TD./Photo by Thad Fenton.

The Wildcats put the only points on the board when quarterback #22 Corey Robertson connected with #11 Collin Carpenter in the end zone for a TD with 2:09 left in the 1st quarter.  #90 Jourdan Escobar’s PAT was good.

In the 2nd quarter, as the weather began to deteriorate, the Panthers mounted long drives that came up short due to Wildcats defense.  The weather also hampered the Wildcats offense, with fumbles killing promising drives.

By the half the daylight was almost gone, and the mist had turned to steady soaking rain.

Most of the 4th quarter was played on the Plano half of the field, with East trying to push through the red zone.

With time running out, and its running game going nowhere, East called in a pass play to break the impasse.  As East’s quarterback faded and cocked back to throw, on the Plano sideline you could hear several coaches almost simultaneously warn East, “Oh, you don’t want to throw at Farhat!  You don’t throw at Farhat!”  Almost on cue, #3 Cody Farhat turned from his man and intercepted the pass that came down from its arc like a duck landing in a pond.  Sure-handed, Farhat returned the ball about 40 yards, setting up the Wildcat offense for clock-draining running plays by #6 Greg Peterson and #27 Drew Grant.

The game ended on a fumble recovery by #79 Jonathon Coleman when the snapped ball bobbled through the Panther quarterback’s hands.  Soaked to the skin and exhausted, the Plano defense held.

Plano JV is now 8-1 for the season and 5-1 in district.
