Ivy League Names Connor Michelsen Player Of The Week

Another former Plano Wildcats quarterback receives recognition this week as NJ.com reports that the Ivy League named Connor Michelsen Player Of The Week.

The honor and recognition came after Princeton sophomore quarterback Michelsen lead the Tigers to a win this past Saturday over long-standing rival Harvard, breaking Harvard’s 14-game winning streak over the Tigers.  The victory for Princeton was even sweeter because it was Princeton’s Homecoming game.

As quarterback for the Plano Wildcats, Michelsen received wide recognition in Texas his senior year, including being named one of Texas High School Football’s “Top 15 Quarterbacks.”

Wildcat Alumni College Update – Fall Practice as of 8-14-11

Time to look in on Wildcat alumni that are vying for college play time. In no particular order:

Carson Meger was 6 for 9 with 67 yards passing and one TD throw in UTEP’s next-to-last day of Camp Socorro. Meger competes for the starting QB spot for the Miners. Read about it here.

C.J. Martin was named pre-season All-American by the FCS Senior Scout Bowl. Full story here. Don’t forget to tune in to CBS Sports on Sept. 1 to watch CJ in action.

Rex Burkhead has clearly earned the starting position at running back, and after the first week of fall practice Nebraska Corn Husker fans know it, asking about who will be his back-up, not his competition. See it here.

Collin Brence is on the roster at Baylor and recorded a tackle during the Meet the Bears intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday. See him signing team posters in the photo gallery.

Connor Michelsen shows on the Princeton Tigers roster, but there’s no action to report until the pre-season camp opens August 24.

Blake McJunkin enters his senior year at SMU with a truckload of experience and now a share of the spotlight now that he’s been named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List.

Beau Brence has lettered on both sides of the ball at UNLV but may be in the defensive end rotation for 2011. The Rebels’ first game is against Wisconsin on September 1 – perhaps another Wildcat alum on TV that night?

Chris Moore was assigned #95 for July training camp at Iowa State. You can watch him in special teams practice here.

* * * Check back for more alumni updates later this week.

For the JV Wildcats the day started and ended with a loss to Hebron JV, with victories sandwiched between.

At today’s PrimeTime Sports 7-on-7 tournament in Farmers Branch, Plano alumni Tim “Tank” Stallings (’95) and Connor Michelsen (’11) coached the JV Wildcats to an overall 3-2 record which earned the Wildcats 2nd Place.

The Wildcats had a rough start, dropping the first game to Hebron 20-8, but recovered and qualified for semi-final play by defeating (Plano) Jasper 27-14 and perennial 7-on-7 powerhouse Arlington Martin 39-6.

In the semi-final round a cross-town rivalry was revisited this summer at the JV level as Plano was matched against Plano West. In May, Plano’s varsity fell to Plano West in the final game of the Frisco Liberty SQT, but today the table was turned as Plano JV beat Plano West JV 40-26.

With the victory over Plano West the Wildcats advanced to the final round where they faced Hebron again, this time losing 38-26, the same margin of loss as in their first meeting of the day.

The JV Wildcats will play two more weeknight League games before they compete at the PrimeTime Sports JV 7-on-7 State Championship Tournament in College Station on July 9.
