Meger may be clear No. 2 at UTEP

Carson Meger did about everything a coach wants Saturday from a walk-on quarterback competing for the primary backup job.

He got his Texas-El Paso team in the end zone and he won. It might not be long until he is no longer just a walk-on, according to the El Paso Times.

Meger was 14-of-27 passing for 182 yards and three touchdowns and his Blue squad defeated the Orange team, 31-17. The all-time leading passer at Plano was part of the biggest play of the day when he completed a 56-yard pass and came back two plays later to toss one of his three touchdowns.

Tim Curry, who has been locked in a battle with Meger, tossed two interceptions and a touchdown for the Orange. By all indications, Meger has won the battle to become the No. 2 quarterback.

UTEP will play six home games at the Sun Bowl in El Paso this season and will appear closest to Plano in the final game of the regular season Nov. 20 at Tulsa. Tulsa is coached by former Allen head coach Todd Graham.

Dinka, Utah State close spring

Maxim Dinka sent a message Saturday as Utah State wrapped up its spring camp in the annual blue-white scrimmage at Romney Stadium.

He’s ready.

The senior led the defense with eight tackles, two for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery, and along the way provided evidence he can be the defensive catalyst in the fall. The performance is comparable to his showings in the other scrimmages this fall. In short, he’s been impressive this spring.

Dinka led Plano to a 13-1 record as a senior in 2005 at Plano, recording 132 tackles and six interceptions. He was also a standout performer in track.

The closest Utah State will play to Plano this year will be in its season opener. The Aggies travel Sept. 4 to meet Oklahoma in Norman. It is about a three-hour drive from Plano.

Meger player to watch Saturday

Texas-El Paso will showcase a new defense Saturday, but fans will most likely be focused on the competition to become the program’s solidified backup quarterback.
Carson Meger, the all-time leading passer at Plano, has been in a battle for the spot with Tim Curry. Meger has been credited for his ability to find open receivers, quickly read progressions and keep plays alive. He’s also been the quarterback to have got his team in the end zone more effectively.
Miner Illustrated says the spring game Saturday at the Sun Bowl will help decide which quarterback might expect more reps in the fall and playing opportunity on Saturdays.

Clark honored with Legends Award

Steve Thomas called John Clark his hero and said there were lessons to be learned from the noted Plano football coach Tuesday during the second annual National Football Foundation’s Gridiron Club of Dallas’ awards banquet.

Thomas, last year’s assistant coach of the year, presented John Clark with the Legends Award. Thomas is the special teams and defensive tackles coach at Plano.

Clark compiled a 107-17 record at Plano, winning a pair of state titles and nine district championships before becoming the district’s athletic director. In that position he helped inspire three more state titles and retired shortly before Plano’s then-record seventh state title. He was a coach on Plano’s first state championship team. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor, the Texas High School Athletic Directors’ Hall of Honor, the Texas Sports High School Football Hall of Fame, and the first inductee in the Plano Athletics Hall of Honor.

Smith honored as NFF scholar athlete

Defensive end Kevin Smith was among 50 seniors honored Tuesday as scholar athletes by the National Football Foundation’s Gridiron Club of Dallas at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Players were nominated for the honor by their coaches and selected based on scholastic performance, involvement, community service and a variety of other factors.

Smith will attend Texas A&M University in the fall and plans to major in engineering. He says tradition and the opportunity to continue wearing maroon was a deciding factor. With Texas A&M’s 12th Man walk-on program, he may attempt to continue playing football or may choose to play rugby.
