MURPHY – Drew Grant helped rally the junior varsity with a pair of short touchdown runs Thursday and the defense took over in the second half to help Plano turn an early deficit into a 43-10 rout of Garland Lakeview at Tom Kimbrough Stadium in a football season opener.

Plano (1-0) fell behind Lakeview (0-1) by two scores early in the second quarter before scoring 43 unanswered points.

Grant scored his first touchdown of the season on a 1-yard tote to give Plano a 14-10 edge with 3:12 remaining in the first half. His score immediately followed a 42-yard strike from Andrew Alexander to Corbin Whitehair.

The freshman’s second touchdown came after Whitehair was hauled down short of the goal line again early in the second half. This time, Grant scored from three yards out to give Plano a 21-10 lead.

That’s when the other Grant made his presence known. Tyler Grant, a junior cornerback, intercepted one pass for a 50-yard touchdown return and came back to score again on a 24-yard touchdown return to put Plano up, 36-10, with 9:45 left in the game.

The season got off to a slow start offensively, with Plano needing four series to earn its initial first down of the year. Three plays later, Davion Harris scored the season’s first touchdown on a 47-yard pass completion from Alexander.

Greg Peterson, a freshman who appeared at linebacker and quarterback, scored the other offensive touchdown when he found the end zone on a 3-yard carry with 8:53 remaining in the game.

But, team defense may have been the difference in a win and a loss in the opener for Plano. Derek Sheldon blocked a Lakeview punt on the opening series of the game and from there a variety of defensive players made key plays in the game.

Matt Hintz recorded a tackle for loss on the second series that put Lakeview into a long third down play that resulted in a field goal to put the team up 10-0, instead of having a shot at a two-touchdown lead.

Jordan Stiff, who recorded a sack on the second series, joined with Brandon Laures on a big stop on the game’s fifth series that stalled Lakeview. Then Dearion Johnson recovered a fumble on the successive series. The fumble recovery led two plays later to Drew Grant’s first touchdown that gave Plano the lead for good.

Stiff’s second sack came on the successive drive and Hintz recorded a sack as Lakeview was attempting to score going into halftime.

Lakeview couldn’t get going in the second half. Evan Hainlin and Kevin Holland teamed up on a safety on the second series, then Tyler Grant turned successive Lakeview series into Plano scores. Ted Kim also had an interception in the second half.
